Donald Trump holds inaugural speech after being sworn in as 47th US president – live

Trump addresses the nation after oath of office; Biden pardons members of his family before leaving office

My colleague Joseph Gedeon in Washington DC also had this look at what Trump might have planned for day one:

In the grand theatre of American politics, presidential inaugurations typically follow a familiar script: the oath, the speech, a few carefully chosen executive orders to satisfy campaign promises. Franklin D Roosevelt used his first day to tackle the banking crisis. Barack Obama moved to close Guantánamo Bay (though it remains open). Donald Trump’s first term began with a single executive order targeting Obamacare. Joe Biden signed 17 executive orders on his first day in 2021.

Palestinians begin search for Gaza’s missing as they return to ruined homes

Ceasefire celebrations replaced by shock and sorrow as people begin to assess the scale of devastation

After the first night in Gaza for more than a year without the sound of drones or bombing overhead following the successful implementation of a ceasefire, people in the besieged Palestinian territory have begun returning to destroyed homes and searching for missing loved ones.

The truce that took effect on Sunday with the release of the first three hostages held by Hamas in exchange for 90 Palestinians from Israeli jails was greeted with euphoria as a large influx of desperately needed aid supplies entered the strip.

Military leaders should expect Trump crackdown – from disloyalty to diversity

Despite tensions brewing with China, US president-elect is expected to ‘clean house’ with those who stray from agenda

As Donald Trump takes the oath of office once again on Monday to be commander in chief, some of the generals and admirals he will command may wonder if his first order to them will be “you’re fired.”

Even as a potential war brewing with China over Taiwan and the South China Sea looms large in the plans of Congress and the general staff, Trump and his team have said that they intend for the most senior military leaders to be loyal to the president’s agenda – and to the president himself – in ways that close observers of military leadership and organization find troubling.

Biden pardons Fauci and Milley in effort to guard against potential ‘revenge’ by Trump

Decision by Biden comes after Trump warned of enemies list, including people who investigated Capitol attack

Joe Biden has issued pre-emptive pardons for Anthony Fauci, retired Gen Mark Milley and members of the House committee that investigated the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, using the extraordinary powers of his office in his final hours to guard against potential “revenge” by the incoming Trump administration.

The pardons included two leading Republicans who have been critical of Trump, former representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, and who could face reprisals from the incoming president.

Freezing rain dampens mood in Washington ahead of Trump’s inauguration – photo essay

Photographer Jordan Gale documents preparations for 60th presidential inauguration, showing a US poised and polarised between hope and fear

Washington is a city on edge. Concrete barriers, unscalable steel fencing and security checkpoints dot the map. In a climate of simmering political violence, and after a divisive election campaign in which he survived two assassination attempts, Donald Trump is returning to an anxious capital where more than nine in 10 voters broke for his opponent, Kamala Harris. A city of tradition and ritual will seek to accommodate the most unconventional of presidents, bringing thousands of Trump’s supporters into direct contact with the residents who feel a sense of foreboding and dread.

Trump will take the oath of office under the magnificent dome of the Capitol Rotunda on Monday due to forecasts of intense cold weather, upending months of meticulous planning for a massive outdoor event with crowds sprawling down the National Mall. The swearing-in was last moved indoors in 1985, when Ronald Reagan began his second term. The rotunda was one of the areas breached during the 6 January 2021 insurrection by supporters of Trump trying to block the certification of his 2020 defeat to Joe Biden.

‘Should we grieve, rejoice or cry?’: Palestinians in Gaza react to ceasefire

Celebrations break out across the territory but many are worried the deal will break down and war will resume

Crowds of Palestinians filled the ruined streets and gathered in tented encampments throughout Sunday to celebrate the ceasefire that came into effect at 9.15am GMT, ending 15 months of devastating war that has killed tens of thousands there and laid waste swaths of the territory.

“I feel very beautiful. We hope that God will complete this joy and that we return to our homes and lands safely. This is the most beautiful joy in the world, thank God,” said Moaz Qirqiz, 46.

Hamas releases first three hostages after ceasefire deal with Israel

Emily Damari, Romi Gonen and Doron Steinbrecher handed over to Red Cross after 15 months in captivity

Three women held hostage by Hamas in tunnels beneath Gaza during 15 months of devastating conflict, including the joint British national Emily Damari, have been dramatically released in the first act of a ceasefire deal aimed at ending the conflict.

Damari, 28, Romi Gonen, 24 and Doron Steinbrecher, 31, were handed over to the International Committee for the Red Cross in Gaza on Sunday afternoon, ending a protracted ordeal that began with their violent abduction by Hamas on 7 October 2023.
