Le Pen invites Meloni to form nationalist ‘super-group’ in European parliament
Leader of France’s National Rally suggests alliance of ID and ECR groups of far-right parties, including Italian PM’s Brothers of Italy
The French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has suggested the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, join forces with her in a new alliance, as the EU’s divided nationalist parties gear up for European parliamentary elections next month from which they are expected to emerge significantly stronger.
“Now is the time to unite, it would be really helpful,” Le Pen told the Corriere della Sera newspaper. “If we succeed we can be the second group in the European parliament. I think we shouldn’t miss an opportunity like this.”
